Student Portraits
Susan McLean
Running Time: 3:52
Susan explains eloquently what brings students to Literacy Partners. Why are there adults in this country who cannot read? There are a myriad of reasons that ultimately force adults, young and old, to confront what is often a painful secret they have kept hidden for many years. Literacy Partners offers hope and opportunity for these people. Susan cites a number of success stories (50% gained employment last year alone) and credits our dedicated staff and cost effective budgeting. However, Susan McLean is one of the best examples of why Literacy Partners works: she has been involved for over 20 years in educating students and is devoted to making a difference in the lives of people who really need help.
Zaffarou Ballegou
Running Time: 3:37
Jaffa has a fascinating story. He is a professional boxer who came to the U.S. for a match in Atlanta. Originally from Togo, West Africa, he only spoke French. Although he is continuing to train as a boxer, his focus is on his education, as he aspires to one day go to college. His ultimate hope is to bring his wife and three children here, and give them the opportunity for an education as well. Jaffa has survived many punches, in the ring and in life – yet his optimism and dedication are truly inspirational.
Tom Martarell
Running Time: 5:24
Tom grew up in the projects of New York City’s lower east side, amidst a culture of violence, guns, gangs, drugs and alcohol. He dropped out of school in the 8th grade, with a drug abuse problem and admittedly heading down a “rough road.” However, the birth of his daughter changed everything. Although shy and intimidated, he enrolled in our program, determined to become a role model for his daughter. His progress is remarkable; he and his daughter, who is now in the third grade, do their homework together and keep each other focused. He also volunteers as a medical transport assistant two days a week. Tom’s dedication, along with his enormous pride in his achievements, makes him one of our finest success stories.
Myriam Phillip
Running Time: 4:33
In a melodic St. Lucian accent, Myriam speaks candidly of her painful embarrassment when asked to read for a church service one day in Texas, a few years ago. She had to face the difficult truth that she was unable to read. Finally, enrolling in our program here in New York, she is at last learning to read – and conquering her fears. Currently, she works as a housekeeper, but she hopes to one day qualify for a better job and be able to send more money home to her family. She reads along with her children, and enjoys knowing she can actually help them with their schoolwork. Best of all, she can now read her bible at night.
Liliana Tenesaca
Running Time: 3:40
Liliana’s poignant story is about the tremendous challenge of struggling to understand English in order to ultimately have a career. She, her husband and two children, came from Ecuador where she had already begun college. Now she must start all over again. Despite her difficulties, she is optimistic and hopeful. She speaks warmly about her experience with the program she has attended at Literacy Partners. Liliana and her husband know this is her path to college and a better career, and they often practice reading together at night. She is committed, in a highly positive way, to improving her life.
