Employment and Education Counselor

Major Function and Purpose:

The Education and Employment Counselor will provide employment, education, and career counseling to individuals and groups of adult students (ages 16+) enrolled in the literacy programs targeted for services under the WIA Title II grant – know to the agency at the “HALI Grant.”

The Counselor will, among other duties:

• Develop and monitor employability plans

• Deliver a variety of workshops at all designated field locations

• Will attend department meetings

• Will attend 15 hours of in-service annually

• Will coordinate services with Education Center Coordinators and Instructors

• Will prepare students for employment and match student with employment opportunities

• Will support individuals though their job search to meet stated goals and benchmarks

• Will take attendance, log counseling notes, and perform other clerical duties as related to the position

• The counselor will facilitate linkages to programs and services in the NYC area that link to higher education and training

• Will adhere to the curriculum

• Will be prepared in advance for all workshops and counseling sessions

Essential Job Functions:

1. On-site employment and educational counseling sessions/workshops to compliment and support the students’ instructional program.

2. Provide regional networking and outreach for student referrals to social service, employment and educational resources.

3. Responsible for assessing, tracking, and documenting student outcomes for the purpose of placing students in appropriate educational/counseling settings and evaluating student progress.
4. Deliver a variety of career counseling workshops including resume writing, interviewing skills, and job-getting/keeping skills, etc.

5. Provide individualized services to students, as appropriate.

6. Complete bi-weekly reporting as required for attendance and funders.

7. Will support students through community outreach and networking.

8. Responsible for Employment goal of 75% of exited students with stated goal of employment.

9. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree required. Experience with NYSDOL/EDGE and Workforce Investment is a plus.

2. Minimum of two years experience in employment and career counseling is essential.

3. Strong organization, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

4. Knowledge of community and referral services within NYC is necessary.

5. Ability to follow program guidelines, understand and document eligibility and provide quality customer service to the LPI student base.
